How To Prepare For Your Makeup Appointment

Want to be your makeup artist’s favorite client? Here are a few key tips to make sure you’re prepared for future makeup services and leave with a flawless look every time!

#1 – Focus on your skincare routine leading up to your appointment

Makeup artists aren’t magicians – sad but true, and your base (foundation) will only be as good as your skin prep. Make sure you’re being diligent with your skincare routine. More specifically, make sure you gently exfoliate your skin with a product you trust 24-48 hours before your scheduled appointment. Exfoliating helps to keep your skin soft and smooth by removing dead skin cells. On the day, this will ensure the skin prep your artist applies is even more effective and foundation looks its absolute best.

#2 – Arrive to your appointment with a clean face

Double cleanse and come with your face completely free of any product – including traces of that stubborn mascara. I know you will be tempted to put on your favorite moisturizer or sunscreen before stepping out the door. Don’t, and I’ll tell you why. Your artist will cleanse your face with a pad and micellar water, or similar product, before applying all remaining skin prep and remove anything you had on your face when arriving.

Your artist has spent countless hours doing research, learning from trial and error, and carefully stocking their kit with products that complement each other and every skin type. We are equipped to handle all different skin textures with various products and application techniques that will create a long-lasting look for your special occasion. You can save yourself and your artist time. The less we have to remove the more time we have for your glam. Don’t worry. We got you!

#3 – Wear hassle-free clothes

I recommend wearing something that's easy to remove that won’t mess up your makeup – think tank or zip-up hoodie in the colder months. This will allow your artist to apply makeup down your neck onto your décolletage and chest if your outfit shows some extra skin.

If you’re getting your makeup done for a bridal trial, try to wear something that's a similar color to your wedding outfit, so you can get a real feel for how your makeup will look on the day. (Ex: wearing a white dress and a fun heel if you know you will be wearing a gown)

#4 – Bring makeup pictures for inspiration

I can’t stress this one enough, friends. It is vital that you and your artist are on the same page about what look you’re trying to achieve. How many times have you sat in a chair and asked for a “natural” look and walked away with something more “Kylie-esque” (full glam with neutral shades)? Natural and neutral are not equal. There are a lot of different buzzwords flying around the beauty industry – often times being misused, so coming with a picture will help your artist understand your comfort level and create a look you will love. Don’t know what look you want? That’s ok! Bring a picture of a look you’re not too crazy about. Every bit of communication helps.

Makeup is meant to be collaborative. Don’t be afraid to give your input. Makeup artists are here to serve you and make you feel like the best version of yourself.

#5 – Leave enough space in your timeline for an 1-hour appointment

Most artists like to have at least forty-five minutes to one hour to complete a full makeup application. As creatives, makeup artists aren’t crazy about being rushed if it can be avoided, and they can always sense when their clients are rushed also. Be sure to give yourself ample time to relax, take in the experience, and get your money’s worth.

Good vibes all around!

Extra credit: If you can, come with your hair done. Makeup artists must show our work to thrive in this industry so if you help them get that bomb shot for their social media channels they will love you forever. Trust me.
